Beyond the classroom
Indigenous program
At Sacred Heart, we encourage students to engage with and celebrate culture, while providing academic and well being support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
Aboriginal Hearts Program history
Almost 15 years ago the college began a working relationship with the Port Augusta and Davenport communities which has strengthened and expanded to communities in the APY Lands and beyond. The Program currently hosts students from Tiwi Islands, Coober Pedy, Alice Springs, Ceduna, Port Augusta and surrounding communities, Port Lincoln, Whyalla and Metropolitan Adelaide.
The college, along with its boarding house, has established an appropriate and culturally supportive environment for its 37 Indigenous students, including providing the Nunga Room space at the Marcellin campus staffed across both campuses by an Aboriginal Education Coordinator and Aboriginal Education Support Officer.
Aboriginal Hearts aspirations
The Aboriginal Hearts Program aims to support each and every child, empower them in their learning, recognise and maximize their potential, develop independence, and teach them to recognise their civic and cultural responsibilities. We aim to achieve this by offering access to a high quality education, recognition of Aboriginal Perspectives in Education, working Relationships and engagement with remote and rural communities, a culturally supportive and inclusive environment and a Holistic Approach to Education. In providing positive educational experiences, Sacred Heart College aims to encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to realize possibilities available to them, increase the likelihood of Secondary School completion and to add to the pool of positive role models and future leaders from Indigenous communities.
Hears Aboriginal Student Bursary
