Vocational education & training
Vocational Education and Training, otherwise known as VET is an opportunity for Sacred Heart College students to undertake Nationally Recognised Qualifications during their schooling. These qualifications are also recognised in the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) and can provide alternative pathways towards SACE completion for both, training and employment purposes, and university entrance.
VET Courses – Funding Models and Eligibility Requirements
VET courses are offered under two key funding models: Subsidised Training and Fee for Service.
Students should be aware that Subsidised Training involves additional entry requirements, including participation in the VET Readiness Orientation (VETRO) process. In addition, Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) is often a requirement to successfully gain the certificate qualification.
To be eligible for a Subsidised Training course, students must:
Complete a literacy and numeracy quiz
Provide evidence of relevant industry experience such as:
A VET taster course certificate (eg Try-a-Trade or Industry Immersion
A reference from work experience
Proof of voluntary work
Year 10 students are encouraged to take part in a VET taster course, available in Terms 2 and 3, to support future eligibility.
Sacred Heart College students are able to access a number of ‘On Campus’ VET Courses as well as a range of ‘External’ VET Courses.

Structured Workplace Learning or Work Experience for VET Students
Some VET courses require students to complete compulsory Structured Workplace Learning (SWL), including a logbook, as part of the qualification. SWL should be undertaken during school holidays or outside school hours. This applies to students studying the following: Cert III Allied Health, Cert III Early Childhood Education & Care, Cert III Individual Support and Cert III Animal Care & Husbandry.
SWL and Work experience requires a Work Placement Learning Agreement (WLA) Form to be completed and returned to the VET Coordinator for signing before placement commences.
The WLA form must be completed and signed by:
- the student
- the parent/caregiver
- the host supervisor
- the SHC VET Coordinator
This is a compulsory requirement to ensure that the College’s insurance provisions are in place. Students will not be insured if they attend placement without this form.
