Hearts News – Week 10 Term 1 2026

Hearts News – Thursday 2 April 2026 (Week 10 Term 1)

To lead us into the celebration of Easter, Stations of the Cross returned to Marcellin Campus today as students reverently brought to life Jesus’ journey, inviting our community into quiet reflection on His sacrifice and the meaning of Lent and Easter.

To our Sacred Heart College community

As we come to the end of Term 1 and enter the Easter Triduum, this edition of Hearts News gives us a timely reminder to pause and reflect on the life of our College community.

Easter is at the heart of the Christian story. It is a season that speaks of sacrifice, love, hope, and new life. It reminds us that even in the midst of challenge, uncertainty, or loss, God is still at work bringing renewal and possibility. The resurrection of Jesus is not simply an event to be remembered, but an invitation to recognise that new life can emerge even from places of difficulty, disappointment, and apparent endings.

In a school such as ours, that hope is often found in ordinary but important ways: a child achieving beyond what they had imagined; generosity shown through Project Compassion; reverence in our Holy Week liturgies; students using their gifts in learning, the arts, and sport; service to others; and the many moments that quietly build a strong sense of community.

As we approach Easter, may it be a time of rest, perspective, and renewal for all families. May it also remind us that new life and renewed hope are always possible. I wish our entire College community a blessed Easter and a safe, restorative holiday break.

Pax Christi!

Acting Principal

Stations of the Cross

Stations of the Cross returned to Marcellin Campus today, this Holy Thursday, offering a moving and deeply spiritual reenactment of the Passion and death of Jesus. Marcellin students reverently brought to life Jesus’ 14-step journey in a solemn performance for staff and peers, inviting all present to pause in quiet reflection on His sacrifice and the true meaning of Lent and Easter.

We welcome all members of the Hearts community to join us tomorrow (Good Friday) at 12 noon in Walter Park for Stations of the Cross, presented by Sacred Heart College and Brighton Catholic Parish.

Meet our Student Leaders – 2026 Arts Leaders

In each Hearts News, two of our 2026 Year 9 and Year 12 portfolio leaders will take part in a brief Q&A so you can get to know them a little better. This week we meet 2026 Year 9 Arts Leader, Kara Lee and Year 12 Arts Captain, Ashton Wren.

  • Kara Lee 2026 Year 9 Arts Leader

What does leadership mean to you?
Leadership to me doesn’t mean just wearing a badge; it is about setting the example and leading others in everything you do, in the small and big things. As a leader, you are a role model and are the voice for everyone in the community and have the power to create change.

What does being a Marist Leader mean to you?
Being a Marist leader means upholding the five Marist Characteristics in the forefronts of our minds in each action that we choose to make to create a better environment around us.

What Marist characteristic do you resonate with the most and why?
The Marist Characteristic I resonate most with is Love of Work. I always try to do my best in everything I take on with passion and determination. I enjoy learning new things and am always ready to tackle every challenge.

As a Leader this year, what is your main focus for the Hearts community and what do you hope to achieve?
I hope to be able to create a community where no one ever feels alone, putting the emphasis on Family Spirit, specifically in the arts, and building connections between both campuses.

A teacher I admire at SHC is:
Mr Jiannis. Every lesson last year he never failed to turn science into something fun and interesting. His passion for the subject and for our learning is admirable and he always puts a smile on our faces. The genuine care and consideration for us as students and for science (specifically biology!) is something I really appreciate.

The best thing about attending SHC is:
Definitely the arts community! Everyone is so welcoming and it’s a great space to express yourself and enjoy your passion to the fullest.

Three (3) words that describe my personality are:
    Compassionate, responsible and determined.

    My favourite book is:
‘A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder’ by Holly Jackson.

    My favourite song is:
‘Running Out of Time’ by Paramore.

    Someone I admire is:
Someone I admire is my aunt. Her consistent care and love for our family is something I am forever grateful for.

On the weekend you will find me:
With my family or at any extracurricular activities.

My greatest accomplishment OR sporting moment so far is:
Winning both the Year 7 and Year 8 SHC All Rounder Award.

The most memorable moment in my life so far was:
Being part of the Hearts Festival 2025. Theer were lots of memories made and it was definitely the most fun I’ve had at any event.

What is your most prized possession?
    My childhood teddy bear.

What is on your bucket list?
    To go to Europe!

What skill would you most like to learn?
Learn how to play a brass or woodwind instrument.

If you were a superhero, who would you be?
Spiderman – getting from place to place would be super easy!

  • Ashton Wren 2026 Year 12 Arts Captain

What does leadership mean to you?
Leadership to me is about providing others direction towards success while exemplifying the characteristics and attitudes that you want to see in your group or team.

What does being a Marist Leader mean to you?
I think being a Marist Leader is quite inspiring as I’m a big fan of all things history, so being a small part of Marcellin’s ongoing mission is highly captivating and holds important life principles.

What Marist characteristic do you resonate with the most and why?
Love of Work. I resonate with this characteristic greatly as I always try to approach my work with enthusiasm and determination, while going both ways to make sure the work I am doing is something that I can connect with on a deeper level.

As a Leader this year, what is your main focus for the Hearts community and what do you hope to achieve?
I plan to work with the current arts/leadership staff to lay the foundations of various long-term projects that can support the wider engagement of students in Music/Arts based programs which develop such fun and life long skills.

A teacher I admire at SHC is:
Ms Tefanis for her humility paired with extensive wisdom and specialised knowledge both in academic and music settings.

The best thing about attending SHC is:
The range of opportunities offered to students.

Three (3) words that describe my personality are:
I’d like to think I’m curious, versatile and conscientious.

    My favourite book is:
    ‘Dune’ by Frank Herbert.

    My favourite song is:
Either ‘4′33’ by John Cage or ‘Everybody wants to rule the world’ by Tears For Fears.

    Someone I admire is:
My brother. I admire his approach to work and his great sense of humour.

On the weekend you will find me:
Likely failing to make something that requires skills way beyond my current abilities.

What is your most prized possession?
    My memory.

What is on your bucket list?
Live somewhere natural in Europe for a while, ideally near a mountain range and a secluded lake.

What skill would you most like to learn?
    3D modelling.

If you were a superhero, who would you be?
USBman – Always flip it the right way up the first time. Would save years!

The Big Water Walk

What an incredible effort from our community supporting Project Compassion!

A big shoutout to our MSol students who took part in The Big Water Walk this morning, an initiative by Caritas Australia, standing in solidarity with communities around the world who walk long distances for safe water each day.

The team walked 3.4km to Somerton Life Saving Club and back, and across the week have helped to raise more than $2,500 for those less fortunate. Every dollar has truly made a difference, and as a community, we’re helping create lasting change.

Thank you to everyone who gave so generously and supported this important cause. Together, we’ve shown the power of compassion in action.

Dupang Festival 2026 on Ngarrindjeri Country

Stage 1 and 2 Aboriginal Studies students attended the Dupang Festival as a part of their summative assessment. This festival was also part of the Fringe Festival, so our students had the privilege of connecting with and learning from First Nations and non-First Nations people from all over Australia.

Our students represented the College to the highest level and engaged proudly with the deep cultural traditions and activities on hand. This involved learning about the Ngarrindjeri style of weaving and wood carving, making fire the traditional way through the lens of the Yuin nation and viewing a mix of traditional and contemporary dance, song and ceremony. To top that off, they spent the night camping under the stars at Long Point on the Kurrangk (Coorong). A special thanks goes out to Meaghan Otte and Mat Chambers for their assistance on the trip.

Nukkun.

Stage 1 Dance and Drama students join for ‘Me, My Selfie & I’ performance

Congratulations to all students involved in the Stage 1 and 2 Production of ‘Me, My Selfie, & I’, which was performed on Monday night. Audience members particularly loved the combination of both drama and dance classes, creating visually stunning dynamics and gripping scenes. From the graceful composure of our dancers to the versatility of our quick-witted actors, the Senior Dance and Drama students have a lot to be proud of!

Directed and choreographed by Angie Logan, this show carried an important theme of socialisation amongst the ever-changing world of social media, a subject rarely addressed from the perspective of young people. Through the production’s brilliant use of tech and projections (with special thanks to Ashton Wren), we were given the opportunity to understand the impact of digital media, and reminded to be cautious yet open-minded to the possibilities it holds.

Students from Champagnat Campus were able to preview the performance and get an insight into Drama and Dance at Marcellin Campus. Owen (Year 8) reviewed the performance below:

This was truly a sublime performance. From the elaborate dances to the passionate acting, every element was thoroughly enjoyable. The play explored the pros and cons of social media, cleverly masking its message with humour and vibrant visuals. Many of my classmates shared this view. Overall, it was a wonderful performance – both funny and thought-provoking from beginning to end. I particularly enjoyed how each character embodied a distinct stereotype, from the quiet social outcast to the dim-witted boyfriend of a certified genius; together, they complemented one another effectively.”

Celebrating Arts Week 2026

Arts Week 2026 was a vibrant celebration of creativity, connection and student voice across Champagnat Campus. It was wonderful to see such a large number of students actively choosing to take part in opportunities including the inaugural Dance Academy, Adam Page’s improvisation workshop and performance, lunchtime Just Dance sessions, classroom competitions, Kahoot quizzes, the radio workshop with Arts Leaders, and our ever-popular photobooth, now expanded to include Sports Day.

We also congratulate our Photography Competition winners: 1st – Grace Blasbery, 2nd – Caela Latada, and 3rd – Kai Dabrowski. A major highlight of the week was the successful music live performances on the Champagnat Oval featuring Marcellin and Champagnat bands, a reflection of the strong Family Spirit and growing connections between both campuses.

Arts Week also reminded us why the Arts are so important in our world. The Arts help students make sense of ideas, stories and emotions, while also building creativity, confidence, communication and collaboration. These are skills that connect directly to real-world pathways and future job opportunities in creative industries and beyond. Seeing the Arts live, in schools and in the community, shows students that the Arts are not separate from life. They help shape culture, inspire innovation and strengthen human connection.

We are also excited for our Arts Leaders’ new 2026 initiative, Hearts FM, which will begin broadcasting on alternate Tuesday mornings from next term.

SACE Art Show 2026

On Monday and Tuesday last week, a selection of Year 9 students visited the SACE Art Show at the Adelaide College of the Arts. The students were able to view 2025 Year 12 artworks and designs. This extension opportunity inspired our students to think about their own future studies in the Arts.

Students and staff travelled by train, building independence and adding to the experience. On the walk to the gallery, students also saw a street artist in action, highlighting different forms of artistic expression within the city. The excursion was an engaging opportunity, encouraging students to reflect on their own artistic ideas while gaining insight into the creativity and dedication required in senior art subjects.

Congratulations to old scholar, Lexi Guerra (SHOC ‘25) who won the Independent Education Union Art Show Award. Her work along with Koby Moir (SHOC ‘25) and Mikayla Lojszczyk (SHOC ‘25) are on display at the Light Square Gallery until Friday 10 April (Open Monday- Saturday).

Historic gold & Marist pride at 34th Marist Basketball Carnival

The 34th Marist Basketball Carnival was a tremendous success, highlighted by outstanding performances, resilience, and a strong sense of sportsmanship across both teams.

Our girls’ team etched their names into Sacred Heart College  history, becoming the first girls basketball team  to claim the gold medal. From the outset, they set a clear goal – to win gold – and their commitment, unity, and belief carried them all the way. Despite a narrow five point loss to Lavalla Catholic College in their opening game, the team used this as motivation, growing stronger with each match. Their determination led them back to the grand final against the same opponent, where they delivered an exceptional performance to secure an eight-point victory. This was a true reflection of their teamwork and growth across the tournament, with Zoe Jaekel recognised as Grand Final MVP for her outstanding contribution.

The boys’ team also had an exceptional campaign, achieving their highest placing in close to 10 years with a fourth-place finish. They entered the carnival with the goal of bringing home a medal and, while they fell just short, their efforts cannot be understated. A challenging round match against Bullen tested their resolve and prepared them for tough crossover games against Assumption and Sale. Battling through these physically demanding contests, the boys showed immense courage and determination, earning the opportunity to play off for bronze, narrowly missing out by 6 points after coming back from a 21 point deficit.

Across the week, both teams embodied the true spirit of a Marist carnival through their sportsmanship, teamwork, and support for not only for each  but also the opponents they faced. Their conduct on and off the court was a credit to themselves and the school, contributing to a positive and respectful culture throughout the event.

At the presentation evening, we celebrated individual achievements. Congratulations to Zoe Jaekel and Hugh Strachan who were awarded Team MVP honours  and Addison Breeding and Noah Brokken the Marist Award for their contributions and leadership. A special mention also to Zoe, Hugh, and Leah McLean, who were recognised for their outstanding performances across the week with selection in the Marist 10.

The 2026 carnival will be remembered not only for the historic success of the girls’ team, but also for the determination, resilience, and unity shown by all players. It was a week that truly showcased what can be achieved through hard work, shared goals, and a commitment to each other.

Summer Intercol Round (SHC v Rostrevor)

The 103rd Summer Intercol Round between Sacred Heart College and Rostrevor College was a showcase of school spirit and sportsmanship. Hosted at Rostrevor, 23 teams took to the courts and fields competing across cricket, badminton, tennis, and touch football.

Our students competed with pride, embracing the Intercol motto “Respect Outweighs Rivalry” throughout the event. A big thank you to Rostrevor for hosting, and to our dedicated coaches and volunteers who made the week possible.

Marist Girls Cup (SHC v Cardijn)

The second annual Girls Marist Cup against Cardijn College proved to be another fantastic occasion, highlighting the continued growth of girls’ sport across both schools.

Held across two days, the event saw a total of 27 girls teams compete across a range of sports, including soccer, football, basketball, volleyball, and netball. The days were filled with energy and enthusiasm, with students proudly representing their school and embracing the opportunity to compete.

Across all matches, players demonstrated excellent teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship. The high standard of play, combined with the positive spirit shown by all teams, made for an enjoyable and successful event.

We congratulate the students who were awarded ‘Most Valuable Player’ by opposition coaches, recognising their effort and performance  throughout the competition.

The Girls Marist Cup continues to grow as a valued fixture on the sporting calendar, and we look forward to continuing this tradition in the years to come.
