CR2_2235

💙 Happy Marist Day! Today we celebrate Marist Day and the spirit of St Marcellin Champagnat, whose vision of Marist education and Family Spirit continues to inspire our Hearts Community.

To our Sacred Heart College community

Today, we celebrate what it means to be Marist and the special spirit that brings our Hearts Community together. Guided by the Marist values of Presence, Simplicity, Love of Work, In the Way of Mary and Family Spirit, we are reminded of our call to walk alongside young people and help create a community where every person feels known, valued and welcomed.

We also welcome back our Solomon Islands Immersion team who arrive home tonight! We look forward to hearing about their wonderful experiences in the coming weeks.

As Term 3 holidays commence, we would like to wish all our families a safe, restful and enjoyable break. I hope it provides an opportunity to slow down, recharge and enjoy some quality time together.

I encourage our Year 12s to use the holidays wisely to finalise any outstanding assignments and prepare for the final weeks ahead, before exams, farewells and the many celebrations that mark the end of their time at Sacred Heart College.

We look forward to welcoming all our students back for Term 4 on Monday 12 October, refreshed and ready for the final chapter of the 2026 school year.

Marist Day 2026

Today, we celebrated our Marist Spirit, coming together as one College community at Marcellin Campus for our annual Marist Day. The day began with joint Homeroom activities, which were warmly received and provided students in Years 7–12 with an opportunity to connect and engage with one another across year levels.

The College Liturgy, entitled ‘Courageous Hearts Can Transform the World with God’s Love’, was centred on the 2026 Marist theme and our College motto: Virtus ubique vincit (under all circumstances courage triumphs). The liturgy invited us to reflect on how, through courage, faith and a willingness to serve others, we can make a positive difference in our world.

At the conclusion of the liturgy, our Year 12 students were welcomed outside with a guard of honour featuring the SHC Drumline, students from Years 7–11 and the Marcellin Staff Band. As they made their way through the guard of honour, the Year 12s were applauded by their peers and showered with blue and white flower petals.

Students then participated in a variety of carnival-style activities, enjoying time together while also raising funds for Marist Solidarity Australia. Marist Day concluded with a whole-College Assembly, which included the announcement of the 2027 Year 12 Student Leadership Team. It was a wonderful day of community, celebration and connection, reflecting the spirit of our Marist family.

Year 9s embrace Rite Journey Camp

As our Year 9 students near the end of their 2026 Rite Journey program, across Weeks 8 and 9 they embarked on an unforgettable adventure at Camp Illawonga on the River Murray.

The camp provided students with opportunities to challenge themselves, build confidence and strengthen the bonds they have developed throughout their Rite Journey. From kayaking, bush craft and mountain biking to cooking their own meals, students were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, work together and draw on their resilience when faced with new challenges.

One of the highlights of the experience was The Abyss, a unique solo camping experience that gave students the opportunity to spend time in quiet reflection beneath the incredible night sky of the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve. This experience encouraged students to embrace independence, appreciate their surroundings and reflect on their own personal growth.

The camp was another important milestone in the students’ Rite Journey, providing them with space to reflect on how far they have come while preparing for the final stage of their journey.

We are proud of the way our Year 9s embraced each challenge, supported one another and continued to grow throughout the camp, showing true Marist Family Spirit along the way.

First Nations SACE Completers honoured

Sixty-one Year 12 First Nations students from across Adelaide were honoured at the Pavilion in North Adelaide on Monday for Catholic Education SA’s First Nations SACE Completers Ceremony with 11 of our 2026 graduating Indigenous students proudly representing Sacred Heart College. This event celebrates the academic accomplishments of our 2026 First Nations graduates while recognising the cultural identity and resilience that shape each of their journeys.

People of Culture was a resonating theme at this event and Uncle Cliffy Wilson provided an inclusive Welcome to Country via the modern (10,000 years old) Tjilbruke Dreaming story that helps to form the Kaurna peoples’ relationship with the country and waterways of the Adelaide Plains. Fr Tom Gleeson blessed the gathering through an interwoven tale of our internal fire and living spirit through Christian and Aboriginal traditions.

Executive Director of Catholic Education in South Australia, Dr Neil McGoran, spoke of the outstanding job that our students had done with their learning via their grit and commitment. He acknowledged the fact that the students’ work played a significant role in enabling First Nations voices to be heard and respected, with these students representing the Living Flame of hope and peace. Dr McGoran challenged the students to turn their education into the life forming wisdom that comes with growth, kindness and gratitude.

Graduating students were then presented with their Catholic Education Completers Certificates and a magnificent piece of artwork. The afternoon concluded with the families and supporters joining the students for afternoon tea.

Congratulations to each one of our students on this fantastic achievement! The Hearts Community is extremely proud!

Preparing to lead in 2027: Year 12 Leadership Camp

Our newly elected 2027 Year 12 leadership group gathered on Wednesday and Thursday this week to attend our annual Leadership Camp. The camp provided valuable time to build strong relationships and connect as a team.

Under the guidance of Julian Farkas from Leading Teams, the group established their vision, trademark and initiatives for the coming year. In order to become a high performing team, the program spent time discussing purpose, culture and behaviours through authentic conversations. The group’s established trademark #RepresentOurCommunity will be lived through their chosen behaviours of setting standards, showing initiative, being approachable, showing respect and valuing others.

The 34 Year 12 Leaders were presented to the College today at Marist Day and we look forward to formally acknowledging the leaders of 2027 at the 2026 Year 12 Graduation Assembly on 22 October.

Year 7s share innovative ideas at STEM MaD Showcase

Last Thursday, two Champagnat Campus Year 7 STEM MaD Teams participated in the CESA STEM MaD Showcase held at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

Participants Izaak, Mason, Elise and Saina displayed their Term 1, 2 and 3 project work titled ‘Nexbin’ and ‘Carbonfix’.

The Nexbin is a public waste bin installed with a sensor to detect when the bin is full. When the red sensor is detected the bin lid automatically shuts and an alert is sent through to the local council to indicate the bin is in need of collection.

The Carbonfix is designed to collect carbon emissions from the school drop off zone and turn these emissions into reusable fuel (liquified carbon dioxide).

The team’s ideas were to address the current pollution and carbon issues in Australia. Their prototypes were created using circuit boards, 3D design programs and a 3D printer. The showcase day was filled with excitement as Catholic schools from around South Australia competed with their displayed ideas.

Students also engaged in a Q&A with guest speaker Nate Taylor from the Australian Space Discovery Centre, had their portraits drawn by a robot and completed an engineering challenge session with Adelaide University.

We congratulate the students on their outstanding efforts and thank them for their dedication and commitment to these projects in 2026!

Wearing Red for Rural & Remote Education

Our Boarding students joined communities across Australia in wearing red for ‘Wear Red for Rural & Remote Education’, a national awareness campaign led by the Isolated Children’s Parents Association (ICPA).

The campaign highlights the educational challenges faced by students and families living in rural and remote communities and encourages people to wear red and share their support.

Our Boarding students understand firsthand the importance of access to quality education, with many travelling from rural and remote communities to be part of our College. By wearing a touch of red today, they helped shine a light on the challenges faced by students who live far from educational opportunities.

It was a simple but meaningful way for our Boarding community to show that where a child lives should not determine the quality of their education. We are proud of our Boarding students for helping raise awareness and showing their support for the families, schools and teachers who work tirelessly to provide educational opportunities for young people in isolated communities.

Celebrating women in agriculture

Our Year 12 female Boarding Leaders, along with three of our female boarders who were sponsored by Old Collegian and Hall of Honour Inductee, Robyn Verrall (SHOC ‘82) to participate in the Youth Governor’s Leadership Foundation, were honoured to attend the United Nations Association of Australia – SA Division’s Annual Fundraising Dinner last Thursday.

Held at the Kent Town Hotel, the dinner celebrated the United Nations International Year of the Woman Farmer and highlighted the vital contribution women make to agriculture, food security, regional communities and economic resilience.

Robyn, agricultural entrepreneur, founder of Harvesting Potential Ltd and the 2022 SA AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award Winner, was the keynote speaker. She shared an inspiring message about food security, rural poverty and the importance of empowering women and girls in regional and rural communities. She also took the opportunity to recognise our students and acknowledge their achievements.

The evening also provided an opportunity for our students to meet the Hon Katrine Hildyard MP and connect with other leaders and advocates who are supporting women and young people across South Australia.

The UN Association’s annual fundraiser raises funds to support disadvantaged rural youth across South Australia, making the evening particularly meaningful for our Boarding students, many of whom come from regional and remote communities.

It was a wonderful evening celebrating leadership, opportunity and the important role women play in shaping the future of our regional communities.

Growing as Leaders: Year 10 Game Changers Leadership Camp

Last week, seven of our Year 10 Game Changers along with Marcellin staff, travelled to the Edmund Rice Centre in Amberley Victoria. This was a great opportunity for them to learn more about the signs of their Game Changers La Valla Track, reflect on their role of service, and deepen their understanding of Christian leadership, and meet with other Marist schools to broaden their connections.

As part of their travels, they visited the Exodus Community. During this, students met with the Brothers of the community and learned about the history of the Olympic park and buildings.

After their community visit, the Year 10s made their way down to Amberly and arrived at the Edmund Rice Centre to finally start their camp. Throughout the camp, our Game Changers had a lot of highlights, especially: The Labyrinth, playing table tennis, basketball, meeting and working with different people, trivia night, hearing the stories of a local Marist Brother, and the closing ceremony, where Sacred Heart said goodbye to the people they had met on the camp and started their trip back home.

Our Year 10 Game Changers had a wonderful time on this trip, saying it was one of the best school camps they have ever been on, and look forward to the future of their Game Changer’s track.

Year 10 RAA Street Smart High: Making safe choices on the road

Yesterday, our Year 10 students attended the annual RAA Street Smart program at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, joining thousands of young people from across South Australia for an engaging and thought-provoking day focused on road safety.

Delivered in partnership with Think! Road Safety, the Government of South Australia and Lifetime Support Authority, Street Smart High is South Australia’s largest youth road safety event. With road crashes remaining one of the leading causes of death for Australians under 25, the program provides an important opportunity for young people to learn about the risks they may face as they begin to take greater responsibility behind the wheel.

Through real-life scenarios, guest speakers and interactive presentations, students explored the importance of making informed decisions and looking out for themselves and others on the road.

While road safety brings everyone together, the conversations extend well beyond what happens behind the wheel. Students were encouraged to consider the importance of protecting the people they love, having the courage to speak up, looking after their mates and building resilience. They also explored how knowledge can help them recognise risk, understand the difference between perception and reality, and ultimately take ownership of their choices and the outcomes that follow.

For many Year 10 students, the experience comes at an important time as they move towards greater independence and, for some, getting behind the wheel themselves. Street Smart provided a valuable reminder that having a licence is not just about holding the keys – it is about making responsible choices every time they get on the road.

Year 7 Writer in Residence: Joel McKerrow Poetry Workshop

During Week 8, we celebrated Australian author and poet Joel McKerrow, best known for his Heist and Urban Legend series, who stopped by as a Writer in Residence and worked with our Year 7 classes as they explored Australian Place Poetry.

Throughout the workshops, Joel performed some of his own poetry for students, shared his tips to work through writer’s block by ‘thinking on the page’ and helped students to write their own poems about places important to them.

The sessions finished with several students sharing their poems which included a great range of poetic devices: alliteration, assonance, metaphor and rhyme the list goes on.

We look forward to hosting Joel again in 2027.

Spring Has Sprung!

In Japan, having a picnic underneath cherry tree blossoms with family and friends is a popular pastime. It is called Hanami and literally means ‘flower-viewing’. Taking advantage of the recent great weather, this Year 7 Japanese class enjoyed eating an early recess in the sun and underneath this beautiful tree at Champagnat Campus.

Arts & Music News

Celebrating our talented musicians at Catholic Schools Music Festival

We are incredibly proud of the 11 Sacred Heart College students who have represented the College at this year’s Catholic Schools Music Festival in a variety of exciting roles.

Over four consecutive days of 5-hour dress rehearsals in the morning, followed by 3-hour performances each night, and straight off the back of a term of combined-school rehearsals, our students have shown an impressive commitment to their music. Their dedication, energy and willingness to continually develop their vocal skills and musicianship have been wonderful to see.

Nine of our students performed as part of the Combined Boys Vocal Ensemble, joining boys from eight other Catholic schools to form an impressive 40-piece vocal ensemble. Throughout Term 3, our Years 7–11 boys have rehearsed across a number of schools, exploring a diverse repertoire ranging from beautiful liturgical works through to a rousing John Farnham medley.

We are also delighted to celebrate Eliana S, who performed as a French horn player, and Eliana M, who took on the role of compere for Thursday evening’s performance. Their contributions highlight the many different ways our students can participate, perform and contribute to the Festival.

Congratulations to the following students who participated:
Combined Boys Choir: Julian G, Kevin L, Victor B, Kayden D, Levi C, Jacob L, Gerard G, Alfonso T
Compere: Eliana M
Orchestra: Eliana S (French Horn)

The Catholic Schools Music Festival is a wonderful annual celebration of music across South Australian Catholic schools, bringing together thousands of students to share their talents through choirs, vocal ensembles, bands, orchestras and other musical groups. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to collaborate with young musicians from across the Catholic education community while developing their confidence, musicianship and love of performance.

We wish all 11 Sacred Heart students every success for the Festival’s final performance tonight. We are so proud of the commitment and enthusiasm they have shown and look forward to seeing them take to the stage!

Senior Drama students bring powerful story to life

Congratulations to our Senior Drama students on two outstanding performances of The Shape of the Grave by Laura Lundgren-Smith on 15 and 16 September at the Debourg Performing Arts Centre at Marcellin Campus.

This powerful and moving production, set during The Troubles in Northern Ireland, explored themes of family, grief, trauma and the impact of violence across generations. Our students embraced the challenging material with maturity, commitment and impressive emotional depth, creating a performance that left a lasting impression on audiences.

The production was brought to life through strong ensemble work, evocative music and sound, atmospheric lighting and compelling performances. Students demonstrated excellent timing and collaboration throughout, with many moments of tension, stillness and emotion that showcased the strength of their work as an ensemble.

It was wonderful to see both our Year 12 and Year 11 students shine on the stage. From powerful character performances to impressive versatility across multiple roles, the beautiful opening song and the many moments of subtle and authentic acting throughout, every student made an important contribution to the success of the production.

Our Year 8 and 9 Drama students also had the opportunity to attend the final dress rehearsal of the Senior Drama performance last Tuesday, which gave our younger Drama students a special opportunity to see the incredible dedication and talent of our Marcellin Arts program, providing inspiration for their future pathways next year and beyond.

We are incredibly proud of the dedication, courage and creativity our Drama students demonstrated throughout the rehearsal and performance process. They should be very proud of the powerful piece of theatre they created together.

Courageous Hearts take centre stage at Champagnat Soirée

Congratulations to all of our students who performed at our recent Champagnat Instrumental & Vocal Soirée #2! It was a wonderful evening celebrating the diversity of musical experiences, abilities and achievements of our students.

Our performers represented a broad range of musical journeys. Some students have been learning their instrument or voice for several years, beginning their musical tuition at Champagnat, while others have continued learning from previous schools or through private tuition. We were also thrilled to see students who have only been learning for one term step outside their comfort zone and share their developing skills with an audience.

The evening featured a wonderful variety of performances, including vocalists, duets and trios. A particular highlight was the clarinet trio, led by Mrs Saba, who performed Hedwig’s Theme from Harry Potter. Idea 15 was another memorable performance, with many audience members recognising this beautiful piano piece.

It was especially wonderful to see students take ownership of their performances by introducing their pieces. This takes courage, particularly for students who are still developing confidence as performers.

A huge thank you to all of the families who came along to support our students, to our performers for the preparation, commitment and courage they demonstrated, and to our instrumental and vocal teachers for supporting our students throughout the evening.

One of the best views of the night was actually the audience – watching families beam with pride as their children performed. These moments are a wonderful reminder of why we value music so highly at Sacred Heart. We love seeing our students put their courageous hearts on display through music!

Due to popular demand, we will be hosting another Soirée in Term 4, so keep your eyes out for details coming soon!

Celebrating our senior sportspersons at the 2026 Sports Presentation Evening

Celebrating the commitment, dedication and achievements of our senior athletes, the 2026 Marcellin Campus Sports Presentation Evening brought our community together in the Br Joseph McAteer Centre’s Marist Hall last Thursday. For the first time, girls sport, boys sport and football presentations were combined into one special evening, recognising students who represented the College across Summer and Winter Sport throughout Terms 1–3.

The evening opened with a fantastic performance from our Music Rock Band, who set the tone for a great night. We would like to thank the students for sharing their talents with us and helping to kick off the celebrations.

We were also fortunate to hear from two outstanding Sacred Heart Old Scholars, Sarah Goodwin (SHOC ’22), who is currently playing AFLW for Adelaide FC, and Emma De Broughe (SHOC ’18), who currently plays cricket for the South Australian Scorpions in the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) and the Melbourne Renegades in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). Fellow Old Scholar Conor Gluyas (SHOC ’23) joined us as our MC and led an engaging conversation with Sarah and Emma about their sporting journeys, pathways and experiences at the elite level. It was fantastic to hear about the opportunities, challenges and dedication that have shaped their sporting careers.

The evening was made even more enjoyable with Paella Man serving a delicious dinner and dessert for our students, families, coaches and staff.

We are excited to continue growing the Sport Presentation Evening in the years to come and encourage all Marcellin Campus students who participate in sport throughout the year to come along and celebrate their achievements with our senior sporting community. It was a fantastic night of recognising our athletes, celebrating their successes and coming together as a sporting family.

Hearts athletes make their mark at Achilles Cup

Today, Sacred Heart College had 18 students compete in the annual Achilles Cup Athletics Carnival at the SA Athletics Stadium. Students competed across a variety of track and field events, and it was fantastic to see our athletes proudly represent the College and showcase their athletic ability.

Despite being a relatively small team, the boys delivered a commendable performance, finishing 5th overall in the B Division. A special congratulations goes to our Under 13 Boys team – Victor B, Nyle R, Xavier C and Leo M, who finished 1st overall in their age group, an impressive achievement for the team.

Congratulations to all our athletes on their efforts and commitment throughout the day!

Adelaide 36ers High Performance Program Basketball Tournament

On Tuesday, four Sacred Heart College basketball teams (two boys’ teams and two girls’ teams) travelled to The Lights at St Clair to compete in the Adelaide 36ers High Performance Schools Tournament as part of our ongoing partnership with the Adelaide 36ers. The tournament brought together schools involved in the 36ers partnership, with students competing across five matches throughout the day. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to test themselves against strong opposition, showcase their skills and experience high-level basketball in a competitive tournament environment.

One of the highlights of the day was an exciting contest between the two Sacred Heart girls’ teams, with SHC Dark and SHC Light going head-to-head in a closely fought match. Both teams demonstrated excellent skill and teamwork, making for an entertaining game. The results across the four teams were outstanding. SHC Dark Blue Girls finished in third place, while SHC Light Blue Girls narrowly missed out on the championship, going down by just one point in the Grand Final.

In the boys’ competition, SHC B Boys took out the B Grade Grand Final, maintaining their undefeated record for the season. The SHC A Boys also progressed to the Grand Final, putting in a fantastic effort before going down to Woodville.

Beyond the results, the tournament provided a great opportunity for our students to represent Sacred Heart College and demonstrate the values of respect, teamwork and sportsmanship. Across all five matches, our students competed with respect for their opposition and displayed the skills and commitment they have developed throughout the season.

Another highlight was the opportunity for students to meet some of the Adelaide 36ers players. They loved having the chance to capture some photos and spend time with Isaac Humphries, Zylan Cheatham and Nick Rakocevic.

The tournament was a fantastic part of the ongoing partnership between Sacred Heart College and the Adelaide 36ers, providing our students with valuable opportunities to compete, develop and experience high-performance basketball.

Stableford Golf Championships

The School Sport SA Stableford Golf Team Championships were held at The Vines Golf Club Reynella last Friday with 18 Sacred Heart students taking part in the competition. It was a fantastic day to be out on the course and enjoying some sunshine, with students representing Sacred Heart and putting their golfing skills to the test.

We saw some great results across the field, with plenty of strong performances throughout the day. Congratulations to Louis W, Leo T and Jakson O, who finished on the 1st place podium for the day! A fantastic result and a great way to finish off the competition.

First and second placings at SA School Teams Chess Championships

Last Tuesday, a group of eager Chess players from Champagnat Campus travelled to Prescott Southern College to compete in the 2026 Schools SA Interschool Chess Tournament.

It was a fantastic day for Sacred Heart College, with both of our teams finishing at the top of the competition! Sacred Heart A claimed 1st place, while Sacred Heart B followed closely behind in 2nd place, making it a fantastic finish for our Hearts teams.

There were also some wonderful individual achievements, with Saina S (Year 7) receiving the Best Girl Award, while Blake L (Year 7) was recognised with the Fair Play and Sportsmanship Award.

Congratulations to all of our Chess players on an outstanding effort, and to both teams on their fantastic results!

Honouring Simon Matthews (SHOC ‘89) at annual Simon Matthews Cup

The Sacred Heart First XI Boys and First XI Girls’ soccer teams took on SHOC Soccer Club’s First XI Men’s and Women’s teams for a special evening of soccer honouring the memory and legacy of Simon Matthews (SHOC ’89), who founded and established the SHOC Soccer Club in 2003.

More than two decades after Simon helped establish the club, his legacy continues through the annual Simon Matthew Cup, building on the strong connections between SHOCSC, the College and our Old Collegians.

Both matches were played in great spirit with plenty of skill, determination and friendly competition on display. The SHOC Women secured a closely contested 3–2 victory, while the SHC First XI Boys took home the cup with a thrilling 4–3 win.

It was wonderful to have Simon’s family in attendance for the evening, who also had the honour of presenting the MVP medals to the standout players from each match. The evening was a fitting celebration of Simon’s contribution to SHOCSC and the lasting community he helped create.

We look forward to continuing this special tradition and welcoming new players into the SHOCSC family.

Year 12 students who will graduate this year are encouraged to get involved for next season, with no fees for their first season at SHOCSC.

Open Girls Basketballers make history as Statewide Runners-Up

Our Open Girls Basketball team made history yesterday, reaching Finals Day at the State Basketball Centre for the first time in more than 15 years!

The Hearts girls faced Immanuel in their semi-final, with the first half proving to be a tightly contested battle. After the break, our girls found their rhythm and began to pull away, eventually securing a convincing 33-point victory and booking their place in the Grand Final. The win set up an exciting Grand Final against the talented and much older Henley Basketball Academy.

The game started all Hearts, with our girls taking control early and Henley struggling to contain them in a man-to-man defence. Henley responded with some sharp shooting from beyond the arc, which continued throughout the game. A switch to a zone defence also challenged our girls attack and ensured the game remained tightly contested until the final siren.

Our Hearts girls left absolutely everything on the court. Their determination, resilience and willingness to fight until the very end was something we could not have been prouder of. Despite going down by just six points, the girls can hold their heads high as Statewide Runners-Up. Reaching Finals Day for the first time in more than 15 years, then competing in a Statewide Grand Final, is an incredible achievement. Congratulations to our Open Girls on a memorable season and for representing Hearts with such determination, pride and Family Spirit.

Middle A Girls win Div 1 Knockout Football Grand Final

Congratulations to our Middle A Girls Football team, who have won the Division 1 School Sport SA Statewide Knockout Football competition after a thrilling four point victory over Henley High School in the Grand Final.

It was a very competitive and physical game from the start, with both teams closely matched. The scores remained close at quarter time and half time, with neither side able to gain a clear advantage.

Henley managed to gain some momentum in the third quarter and took a two goal lead into the final break. The Sacred Heart girls responded strongly in the fourth quarter, showing plenty of determination and fighting spirit. They kept the ball in their forward half for much of the quarter and competed hard for every contested ball. Their pressure and persistence allowed them to work their way back into the game and eventually take the lead. In a tense finish, Sacred Heart held on to secure the win, finishing with a final score of 8.10 (58) to Henley’s 8.6 (54).

A fantastic result for the girls and a great reward for their effort throughout the season. Congratulations to the whole team and coaching staff on a fantastic achievement. A big thank you also to the parents and families who came out to support the girls and cheer them on from the sidelines.
